Restgarth Care Home Newsletter March 2017

Restgarth Care Home Newsletter March 2017

Welcome!

We would like to give a warm welcome to Nathan our new care coordinator which is a new role to Restgarth Care Home. Nathan’s role is to ensure all our resident care plans are up to date, reviewed regularly and to assist in the smooth running of the home. Nathan has 4 years’ experience in care, including mental health, dementia and learning disabilities.

We would also like to introduce Luke who is the new manager of Restgarth Care & Support Home Care. Luke has 8 years’ experience in the care sector ranging from managing residential settings to overseeing the running of home care services. Restgarth will now be providing support to those in the surrounding community offering personal care, cleaning, shopping and meals on wheels.

We have also welcomed Beverly and Eirwen to the care staff team and James is helping Julie, our chef, in the kitchen.

New Senior Staff

We would like to mention that two of our care staff have been promoted to senior care assistants after undergoing some training and support from Dean our manager. Well done to Rebecca and Janet and we wish them the best of luck in their new roles.

“This is Me”

Dean has introduced a “This is Me” poster that will be placed in all resident’s rooms. Lynda has been busy spending time with residents individually and created personalised posters with likes, hobbies and life stories. Polperro Harbour Trip

A few of our residents and staff took a lovely stroll down to the harbour in Polperro on Saturday 19th February 2017. Naomi, Rebecca and Janet took Edna, Joan, Roma and Elizabeth for a stroll down to the harbour and around the village. Everyone was wrapped up well as it was rather nippy out but that didn’t stop them enjoying themselves.

Looe Library

Back in November 2016, Lynda, our activities coordinator, attended an event at the Mill Pool centre in Looe called the “Loop the Loop” which was organised by the library in conjunction with the arts council. The event was a photography tea treat where we were given a talk by professional photographer Gavin Goulder. He talked about his work across the world as a freelance photographer for newspapers and magazines. We saw some fascinating photos and heard the stories behind them as well as gaining some professional advice and inspiration along with some tea and cake. The event was aimed at home library users who find it difficult to access services to support their creativity through photography. Each person was asked to produce a photograph of something that was important and dear to them in their life and send it to both Joanna Mayes -artist and film maker and Gavin Goulder who will enter all entries into an exhibition. Our residents were all supported by Lynda to produce a photo each to enter. The library also loaned us a new camera during the month of December for the residents to use. Below are just some of the entries our residents submitted for the exhibition.

We would like to say a big “Thank You” to all the staff at Looe Library who were very supportive and made this visit and other recent trips so enjoyable.

Restgarth Care Home newsletter February 2017

Welcome to Restgarth’s February newsletter.

We would like to give a warm welcome to Dean, our new manager, who joined us at Restgarth in December. Dean has a very friendly approach, he is always ready to listen to our folks and accommodate any requests.

We are also delighted to welcome Julie, our new cook, who recently started with us. Julie has already made some great improvements to our menus, and has a real talent for making scrumptious cakes that can’t be resisted.

Voice of Restgarth. Ten of our residents have formed a committee called the “Voice of Restgarth” which had its first meeting on the 3rd February 2017. The committee will meet every two weeks to discuss any requests to the menu and changes around the home. Also the residents will play a part in our selection of new staff and what skills they would like staff to have in supporting them.

Our residents have been busy knitting squares to make a patchwork blanket for use in the Restgarth van. Our activities coordinator organised our folks to knit the individual squares before being sown together. It really brightens up the interior of our van.

Activities this month: Our residents enjoyed a recent trip to the Theatre Royal in Plymouth to watch “Snow White” with the members of Polperro Memory Café. A few of our residents went shopping at Trago Mills with our activities coordinator and purchased lots of craft items to keep them busy over the next month with stocking up our new shop. We have set up a new shop in our  reception area selling handmade gifts with all proceeds going into providing our residents with an innovative activities schedule. Our chef treated our residents to a special Valentines Day menu which included a delicious white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake.

Welcome to the December Newsletter

Congratulations Katie

We are very pleased to announce that Katie Squires, our recently appointed manager, has been awarded Registered Manager status by the Care Quality Commission. To achieve this managers must demonstrate that they provide safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led services that comply with the new fundamental standards of quality and safety.

Katie moved down to us in August and has been instrumental in establishing Restgarth’s high standards of person centred care. She also ensures that our fantastic team of carers continue to deliver a first class service based on old fashioned principles of care, compassion and respect.

What we have done at Restgarth since our Inspection

What we have done at Restgarth since our Inspection

What we have done since our inspection

Following our CQC inspection back in July, Restgarth has made vast improvements to the service we provide to ensure we give high quality care. The improvements made by the service so far are:

·         Up to date person centred care plans which clearly outline the needs of the client and how they wish to be cared for, we review these monthly, and as and when needed to ensure the information is always accurate and person centred.– we have had compliments from the emergency services stating how impressed they were when they saw them.

·         All our staff are either undergoing or have completed all of their mandatory training, the care certificate which came in to place in April, and also their NVQ in health and social care. All our care staff are highly medication trained, and often attend training courses with Cornwall council to gain extra knowledge.

·         We have increased our staffing levels in accordance with our occupancy numbers, and this is reviewed regularly. Having increased our staffing levels, we can give quality care to our clients and that one to one time. Some staff will sit down and eat a meal with the clients who have difficulty engaging in an activity, this helps ensure they receive healthy nutrition. We now have a fantastic activity rota in place which offers daily activities and also outside parties coming in to provide entertainment – the residents are very pleased with this.

·         We have improved the way in which we respond to complaints; once a complaint has been made, you will receive a letter from management outlining what action has been taken to solve this, and how we will monitor it to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

We will continue to improve the service we are providing and welcome any suggestions anyone may have to help us to do that.
