Korean Dog Resuce
For many years Orchard Care (SW) Ltd, has worked with a South Korean Animal Charity, KDS Rescue. KDS rescue dogs and cats from the horrors of the Korean dog meat trade.
The dogs are rescued and then taken to the ‘Rainbow Sanctuary’, an hours drive from the Korean capital, Seoul. Whilst there, they are socialised and helped to overcome their fear of humans. The sanctuary is run by three dedicated individuals, Jenny, Jake and Juno, who live at the shelter and work everyday, just taking time out to sleep.
Our main role is helping with the transportation of the dogs from Korea to Seattle in the States. We help to provide funds for the flights so that dogs can safely reach Sian Davies, our associate in the US. Sian will then arrange, through a team of foster families, adoption events where the dogs are adopted to their ‘forever’ homes.
What is truly amazing is that between us we average around 40 dogs per month to the States, this is made possible by the efforts of volunteers and donations! Two of our Korean rescue dogs are regular visitors to Pine Lodge Care home.
Our director, Jonathan, visits South Korea and helps out at the Rainbow Sanctuary, mostly helping to socialise the dogs by walking and just ‘hanging out’ with them. Due to the large number of dogs there, few get a chance to have human contact. That said, those who do have behavioural issues do benefit from the skills of the sanctuary’s trainer, Jake.
On his last visit to the sanctuary in March, Jonathan befriended Labradors, Bobby, Boris, and Lizzie. All three were recently rescued from a dog meat farm, Bobby is an ex-police dog!
Orchard Care (Southwest) Ltd is planning to fly all three to the UK in June with a view to homing them here. The dogs are currently having there veterinary tests carried out so as to ensure that they will meet the stringent UK animal standards. All three dogs have good natures and despite their past experiences still love being with humans.
In order to do this, we are looking for people to help us with a view to fostering and adopting, not just these three beauties, but with future projects involving finding good homes for Korean rescue dogs. Please do make contact if you can help.
